What is Entertainment Law? I get that question all the time. There is no special science to it. Entertainment law deals with legal issues that are pertinent to those in the entertainment industry, namely: musicians, performers, artists, authors, singers, writers, producers, production companies, playwrights, filmmakers, actors, etc.
We negotiate, draft, review and revise contracts in the entertainment industry. We also help you protect your assets and ideas whether you perform as a group or show case your individual talents.
If you have made any creative or original work, it should be protected. The United States Trademark Office, Copyright Office and Patent Office all assist persons in registering their works for protection in ownership of those works. These works are called intellectual property. This term describes the type of property that results from original creative thought, as patents, copyright material, and trademarks. To protect your rights to prosecute someone for stealing your work, you must register them with one of these offices.
The United States Patent and Trademark Office processes and approves applications for patents as well as registers trademarks. A trademark is designed to protect words, names, symbols, sounds, or colors that distinguish goods and services from those manufactured or sold by others and to indicate the source of the goods. Trademarks, unlike patents, can be renewed forever as long as they are being used in commerce. A patent protects an invention. Patent law is a highly skilled area of the law which requires an attorney that is licensed to practice Patent law. It is highly recommended that you seek a licensed and experienced patent attorney to prepare your patent application. The United States Copyright Office registers copyrights. The website is very user friendly. Anyone can download the applications and complete them. If you have questions about completing the application, please contact our office and we will be happy to assist you in the process.
